'Migrants fill most job positions'

Friday, 10 Aug, 2007

Almost two-thirds of jobs in the UK have been filled by migrants over the past decade, it has been claimed.

Government figures released earlier this week highlight that Britain's workforce now includes 1.5 million migrants, with Philip Hammond, the shadow chief secretary, stating that the number is likely to be higher because the figures did not account for those in transitory accommodation.

The figures show a rise of 61 per cent of the total number of people in employment in the UK since Labour came to power.

"Migrants make a huge contribution to our economy, but the real jobless total exceeds 4 million and more young people are not in work, education or training than in 1997," stated Mr Hammond.

"When you read the small print, it's clear that [Mr Brown's] so-called achievement on employment as chancellor was thanks in large part to migrant workers, not his policies."

In related news, MPs and peers recently warned that changes to the government's Highly Skilled Migrants Programme are in breach of the European Convention of Human Rights.

Five Tips for a more effective CV.
