The overall outlook for jobs, while far from hopeless, is still challenging and applicant numbers are up.
Media companies with products serving the B2B sector, particularly energy and telecoms verticals, are confident, but fear is still gripping a good deal of the broad, consumer media sales employers. Skills in search and web development remain sought-after, all things digital still look healthy but media buyers and those in media sales are still not being taken-on in anything like the numbers we'd expect at this time of year in more buoyant times.
What of the job prospects further down the line, for 2010? It's hard to say. We're getting a mixture of reactions from our media employers. Some would like to be confident but are still finding business challenging and are being forced to rein-in costs. Most are maintaining, rather than cutting staff numbers and filling only positions that become empty rather than create new openings. Some however, and it appears to be mostly the smaller companies, are actively pursuing growth plans and building their teams, and digital specialists are still forging ahead so there are certainly some reasons to be cheerful. There are media jobs out there!
