How to fare better in the current job market

Tuesday, 10 Nov, 2009

You'll need to brush up your skills in the application process if you're looking to move your career on in the next six months. I need hardly say it's no longer a candidate-short market for the most part (there are always exceptions) so not surprisingly, employers are more choosy and demanding than they were two years ago. Your CV will be one among many should you make an application, so more than ever it will need to be concise, easy to read, and deliver its information clearly to a busy reviewer. It'll need to include what you've actually achieved in your various positions, not just list your job description. Long-winded, cliché ridden tomes full of spelling and grammatical errors that favour responsibilities over achievements tend not to impress and; don't shoot the messenger here, these do tend to be more like the norm than the exception.

The good news is that this is easily remedied. The web is hardly short of advice on writing a good CV, there's a page on the Reilly People website. Read this and things like it before submitting your CV and work on making it easier for the reader and more efficient at selling you.

Things are looking up; there are more media jobs around but we all need to put that little more effort in, and if you're looking for a new media job, or virtually any job, that starts with writing a better CV. You know it makes sense!
